Children’s Programs

There is a saying that inspires our work with young people: Kid and Watering Cans
  • If young people are not introduced to nature,
they cannot learn to love it.
  • If they do not learn to love it,
    they will not protect it.
  • If they do not protect it,
    it will soon disappear.

Our organic farm is a special place for nature education. Combining vegetable farm fields with butterfly and children's vegetable gardens, along with some woods, wetlands, and prairie, this place is a wonderful resource for children to get acquainted with nature.

Visits to the Farm by School Classes, Scout Groups, and Other Youth Groups

With advance arrangements, our educational staff is available to Boys in Barnhost elementary school classes as well as Cub Scouts, Brownie Scouts, and other youth groups. We provide age-appropriate tours of the farm and educational activities.

High school and college classes, as well as adult groups, also come to the Farm for educational tours and activities. Interested persons should contact us.

Nature Rangers is a summer camp program intended for children entering grades 1-5. Camp runs for one week at a time, Monday through Friday. Half of the sessions, in alternating weeks, are for children entering 1st or 2nd grade in the fall, and the other half are for children entering 3rd , 4th, or 5th grade in the fall.

All of the 10 week-long Nature Rangers sessions are morning programs, 9 am to noon.

Spend a fun-filled week connecting with nature, exploring the farm, and learning how to garden. Children will participate in games, crafts, storytelling, music, cooking, and as always, growing and caring for the garden. Campers will leave recharged from a week of being active in the outdoors and will also bring home seasonal produce when available. Each session will have different seasonal activities so sign up for as many as you’d like!

Nature Buddies

This program is intended for children ages 3-5 along with a parent or caregiver. The first two sessions, June and July, meet once a week on Thursdays for four weeks. The third session meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays finishing before mid-August when older siblings will start school.

Children will be introduced to various seasonal nature topics including birds, bugs, weather, and—of course—gardening! We will explore the farm, read stories, do nature-related crafts, and spend plenty of time getting dirty in the garden and eating fresh-picked snacks. Classes meet rain or shine (except for severe weather) so Nature Buddies should dress appropriately for the weather. Come and discover the wonders of nature with
your child!
