Write Senator Obama and Your Representative in the U.S. House

On April 6, 2006, the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act was introduced into the Senate and House. This legislation does two things:

  • Asks the USDA to revise the definition of Foods of Minimum Nutritional Value (FMNV).
  • Gives the USDA authority to write guidelines for all foods available during school hours on the school campus.

Senator Richard Durbin was an original co-sponsor.

Write to Senator Obama and your Representative in the House and ask them to become osponsors of this important legislation.

To write a letter, go to the Stir It Up Campaign website.

Right now, the USDA provides guidelines for foods served as part of reimbursable meals. But no guidelines exist in the vast majority of our nation's schools for snack and beverage vending, a la carte items in lunch lines, school stores, etc. The USDA is the government agency that could write these guidelines but the Congress needs to grant them authority to do so. That is the purpose of this legislation.

To determine your Representative in the House:

1. Get your 9-digit zip code at the US Postal Service website.

2. Enter the 9-digit zip code at top of US House of Representatives website.

The 9-digit number is important because some zip codes areas are split between more than one US representative.
